When should you travel to Sicily?

For most northern European travellers, spring and early autumn give the best combination of weather, price and space. July and August can be wonderful, but also hot and busy. For a quieter trip, aim for April to June or September to October.

The most important question is not simply which town, but what kind of holiday you want. Do you want to step straight into city life, stay by the beach or have a central base for day trips? The east coast works well for many first visits because Catania, Taormina, Etna and the coast can be combined in one trip.

Giarre is a good base if you want to stay in a local town while remaining close to the classic sights. You often get more space, quieter surroundings and easier access to the main roads than in the busiest tourist centres.

  • Day 1: arrival, groceries and a quiet evening in the local town.

A realistic budget depends on the season, car type and how early you book the flights. Start with flights, accommodation, car or transport, food and activities. Booking early and staying somewhere with a kitchen often make the biggest difference because not every meal has to be eaten at a restaurant.
