Begin with the kind of beach day you want
No single beach between Catania and Taormina is best for everything. Choose according to the day: a relaxed family outing, a morning swim, snorkelling, dramatic scenery or a beach combined with a town visit. Along a short stretch of the Ionian coast, you will find broad sand, pebbles, compact coves, lava platforms and lidos with very different facilities.
Think in beach types before names. Sand is often easiest for young children and long stays. Pebbles can mean clearer water but usually require water shoes. Rocky areas suit a swim, snorkelling and a view, but are less comfortable with a large bag and small children. Choosing the type first greatly improves the chance of a good day.
Why the east-coast beaches differ so much
Etna's lava, sea currents and the shape of the coast create striking changes over short distances. Some stretches are dark and volcanic; others are made of pale pebbles or sand deposited by rivers. Old fishing harbours and later urban development also determine where the shore is open, built up or served by restaurants and lidos.
For centuries, this coast was used mainly for fishing, trade and sheltered anchorage. Modern beach tourism grew much later. Giardini Naxos became a clear seaside resort, while beaches closer to Catania serve both the city's residents and seasonal visitors. The result is less uniform than resort coasts in parts of Sardinia or Salento, but far more varied.
Price and scenery do not always go together. A modest-looking beach can have simple parking, shade and facilities that make it excellent for a family. A famous cove may be unforgettable for an hour but uncomfortable for a full day.
The main beaches and who they suit
These are the most useful beach areas between Catania and Taormina.
3.1 Playa di Catania
A broad sandy beach south of the city with both lidos and free sections. It is easy for a conventional beach day and for small children, and it can be combined with a Catania visit. Expect traffic and an urban setting rather than a hidden cove.
3.2 San Giovanni Li Cuti and the Aci coast
Dark lava, platforms and quickly deepening water give this coast an urban, volcanic character. It is good for a short swim, snorkelling and a look at local coastal life, but less suitable for toddlers who need sand and shallow water.
3.3 Fondachello and Marina di Cottone
These long pebble and shingle beaches are easy to reach from Giarre. There are free sections and lidos, and the coast often feels more spacious than the famous coves near Taormina. Bring water shoes; the greatest advantage is the short journey from the base.
3.4 Giardini Naxos
This established resort combines beach, promenade, restaurants and views towards Taormina. It works when a group wants different things: some can swim while others walk or sit at a café. Parking becomes difficult in peak summer, so arrive early.
3.5 Isola Bella and Mazzarò
These are among the coast's most recognisable views. They are excellent for a shorter visit, a swim and photographs, but less convenient for a full day with lots of equipment. Expect steps or the cable car, pebbles, limited space and high demand.
3.6 Letojanni, Mazzeo and Sant'Alessio Siculo
North of Taormina, these beaches often offer more room and easier full-day logistics. Letojanni has a lively town-beach atmosphere, while quieter sections suit families and travellers who value space more than a famous backdrop.
- Young children: large, predictable beaches with simple access and room for breaks.

- Local atmosphere: town beaches near bars, fishing activity and everyday life.
- Beach plus town: swim in the morning, then eat or walk in the nearby centre.
Timing, transport and the beach surface
Ask how long you want to stay and what comes afterwards. For a full family day, access, shade and the surface matter more than fame. For a quick swim and a view, you can accept steps, rocks and fewer facilities. In July and August, the morning is usually easiest because both heat and parking pressure increase after midday.
Five practical rules help:
- Bring water shoes for pebbles and lava rock.
- Do not combine the beach with a demanding late-afternoon city programme.
- Carry extra water and something salty in July and August.
- Visit famous coves early and keep the easier beaches for later.
- Allow 20-40 per cent more travel time on peak-season weekends and changeover days.
A car is the most flexible option for most east-coast visitors. Public transport rarely connects the beaches in a way that suits children, equipment and a flexible return. From Giarre, choose nearby beaches on very hot days and longer trips when the temperature is milder.
The cost depends mainly on whether you rent loungers and a parasol at a lido. Decide which days justify the facilities and which days you will use the free beach with your own equipment. Paying every day becomes expensive, but refusing all shade and facilities can make a family day unnecessarily hard.
How the beaches change through the year
Spring and early autumn often give the best combination of temperature, space and easy logistics. A beach that feels calm in May can be noisy and difficult to park at in August. In winter, the coast is used more for walks, views and short stops than swimming.

- July-August: maximum beach activity, crowds and heat.
- September-October: warm sea and often a calmer atmosphere.

Mistakes that spoil the beach day
Wind direction can change the conditions completely within a short distance. A beach that looks perfect online may be rough that day while a nearby bay is calm. Local residents change beaches according to the conditions rather than using one favourite all season.
Think about the return journey too. A less famous beach near the base can provide a better overall day because everyone still has energy for dinner or an evening walk.
During high season, the best-known places are used by both visitors and local families. Spread your visits through the week and use quieter stretches during the busiest hours. This usually improves your own experience and reduces pressure on a few small coves.
Pebbles and lava rock become extremely hot by late morning. With children or older travellers, swim early and use the hottest hours for lunch or a town visit. Weekend parking patterns also differ from weekdays, so leave extra time from Friday to Sunday.
